The 1745 Association by Donald J. Macdonald of Castleton. In 1945 a bi-century commemoration of the raising of the Standard of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was held in Glenfinnan under the auspices of the National Trust for Scotland. In view of the large attendance, the great interest aroused at home and overseas, and the many questions asked relating to the history of the '45 period, the late Captain C.L.D. Tully, a retired Army Officer resident in Fort William, conceived the idea of founding a society to be known as "The 1745 Association." The Society was duly formed the following year. One of the many activities carried out by the Association was that of the erection and maintenance of a Memorial Cairn (1956 at Loch nan Uamh near the spot where the Prince landed in 1745 and embarked for France in the Heureux on 20th September 1746. Annually a Gathering is held in various parts of Scotland which have Jacobite associations, a Dinner and the Annual General Meeting are held, with tours around spots of interest. This year we met at the site of the Battle of Prestonpans, and later Traquhair House, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, the National Museum of Antiquities, Huntly House, and Doune Castle. The meetings are held over a long weekend, and are enjoyed by all our members. In 1975 the Association meets in Inverness as our base. Any interested are asked to read the advertisement below which gives the necessary information for joining.
The 1745 Association (and National Military History Society) Objects: Loyalty alike to the Reigning House and to the memory of those honourable men and women who suffered in the '45 Rising. To mark sites of Jacobite history. To preserve and disseminate articles and notes dealing with Jacobite history. To further an enlightened study and teaching of the House of Stewart and the Jacobite period. To encourage the study of Scottish military matters during and after the Rising of 1745. Note: The Association is non-political and non-sectarian.
